Have you ever noticed trees that look like they are being strangled, or observed plants that seem to grow everywhere? What about those strange insects that seem to infest your local landscape? When you fish, do you notice Zebra Mussels, Asian Carp, or other invasive freshwater or marine organisms?

Invasive species have hitchhiked to the United States from other places around the world. Many invasive species have no natural predators in the United States to control their populations, so their numbers rapidly grow over time. Invasive plants and insects disrupt our biodiverse ecological system by spreading en masse and outcompeting native species.

According to US Fish and Wildlife Services, “Invasive species are a primary cause of global biodiversity loss. They threaten nearly half of the imperiled species in the United States and have contributed to more than 40 percent of the current listings under the Endangered Species Act. In the United States, invasive species cause an estimated $123 billion dollars in damage and costs every year to things like agriculture and public health, but also sport fishing, hydropower facilities, municipal water supplies, and the aquaculture industry!”

As invasive plants grow, they continually compete for space, spreading seeds and roots and reducing or eliminating our native plants. Many invasive plants become so unruly they strangle trees, clog waterways, destroy crops, introduce disease, and overrun yards and parks.

According to the EPA: “From May through August, adult females lay clusters of 20-30 light green or yellow, elliptical-shaped eggs on the undersides of leaves. They usually produce one or two generations per year in cooler climates. Still, they can lay up to five generations yearly in warmer temperatures.”

Initially found in the mid-Atlantic, this invasive bug is spreading everywhere and has no natural US predator. Lanternflies may look pretty, but they’re disastrous to vineyards and orchards, chewing grape vines and decimating fruit trees. Their sticky honeydew residue can be found on our clothing, vegetation, and tree bark. EntomologyToday notes that the “SLF has a host range that incorporates over 70 host plant species. SLF can deposit up to almost 200 egg masses on a single host. Still, it need not be a plant: the lanternflies are happy to place egg masses on stones, fences, and other construction material, which makes them a great hitchhiking species.”

Greenwashing can cloud a company’s sustainable and ethical business practices.

Not all companies that claim to prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are truly committed to sustainable and ethical business practices. “Greenwashing” makes it difficult for consumers to know the difference between marketing and action.

The term “greenwashing” was coined by environmentalist Jay Westerveld. In 1986, he wrote an essay in which he criticized the irony of the “save the towel” movement in hotels at the time, according to Earth.org.

“He noticed the vast amount of waste he had come across throughout the rest of the hotel, where there were no visible signs of efforts being made to become more sustainable,” writer Deena Robinson explained. “He said that instead, the hotel was simply trying to reduce costs by not having to wash towels as much but while trying to market it as being eco-friendly.”

Greenwashing today refers to the practice of making exaggerated or misleading claims about a company’s environmental, social, or governance practices to appeal to consumers concerned about sustainability and ethics.

Greenwashing can take many forms: from using vague or meaningless terms like “eco-friendly” or “natural,” to making outright false claims about a product’s environmental impact.

For example, a company might market a product as “biodegradable.” And while that product might biodegrade, it may do so at such an extremely slow rate that it still contributes to long-term pollution. Similarly, organizations may highlight a single eco-friendly aspect of their operations while neglecting other unsustainable practices that add up to more harm overall. This selective disclosure misleads consumers, preventing them from making informed decisions and effectively addressing environmental challenges. By misrepresenting practices, companies can divert attention from their actual environmental footprint. Greenwashing makes it difficult for consumers to assess the true sustainability of that company’s business operations.

Executives in the study did report that they wanted more transparency and opportunity to overcome their top barriers. 87% agreed that “if business leaders can be more honest about the issues they face with becoming more environmentally sustainable, they can make meaningful progress.”

Technological advancements are being considered a priority investment alongside sustainability. Companies can streamline operations, socialize initiatives to appease consumers and encourage other companies to make impactful changes. They can also measure and report on the impact of their efforts to encourage future progress.

A carbon footprint is a collection of data that shows how actions and choices made in an individual’s daily life equates to carbon emissions. You may already be familiar with this concept. But are you aware that many companies are focused on making a positive impact by reducing their carbon footprints?

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) refers to a set of criteria that investors and companies use to assess the sustainability and ethical impact of their investments and business practices.

Raising chickens has picked up steam as a popular hobby in recent years, with big benefits including fresh eggs and a better environment.

Taking a stroll through many neighborhoods, it’s becoming more likely you’ll see a flock of hens exploring suburban – or even urban – backyards. Raising chickens has picked up steam as a popular hobby in recent years, especially among millennials and Gen Z. Since the pandemic, many have started to explore backyard farming not only as an enjoyable pastime but a way to feed their families and make a positive impact on the planet.

In its 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey, the American Pet Product Association (APPA) estimated an increase in ownership of backyard chickens from 8% of American households in 2018 to 13% in 2020. It’s no surprise that when people start their own backyard coop, it’s usually because they want fresh eggs.

Eating Locally Reduces Environmental Impact

When keeping your own coop, you can easily produce 200-300 eggs per year. These eggs are coming from chickens that have room to stretch, forage, and socialize (chickens are surprisingly communal!). Both eggs and chicken meat bought from the supermarket are often sourced from industrial farms. These farms, built with profit in mind, usually keep chickens in cramped cages. In a lot of these operations, a chicken might go through its entire life without ever exploring the world beyond its cage.

Humane animal conditions aren’t the only concern. These massive operations are substantial environmental polluters – of waterways in particular.

According to a report from the Pew Environment Group, the Chesapeake Bay is suffering from the roughly 523 million chickens produced a year in just Maryland and Delaware alone.

“The environmental consequences of the broiler business’ explosive growth are especially profound in the Chesapeake Bay, one of the nation’s most important, scenic and threatened bodies of water,” said Robert Martin, an expert on industrial animal agriculture reform at the Pew Environment Group. “Instead of working to limit the effects of all this chicken waste, the industry has fought to avoid responsibility for cleaning up one of our national treasures.”

And don’t forget – when you can walk out to your backyard for eggs instead of driving to the store to buy a dozen that’s been shipped on diesel-guzzling trucks for hundreds of miles, it’s most certainly a win for the environment.

Chickens and Gardens Go Hand-in-Hand

When my husband and I started our own flock this summer, one of the benefits we were most excited for was experiencing the harmony between chickens and our garden.

We’ve been buying chicken compost for years, as it’s one of the best natural fertilizers for a garden. Now, instead of buying expensive bags of compost, we can take the waste product from our flock to boost our crop yield.

Don’t add it directly to your garden though, the Chicago Botanic Garden warns. High in ammonia, it needs time to break down. Mix it into your compost pit, give it about six months, and you’ll have the perfect, nitrogen-rich soil to add to your garden.

In addition, chickens can drastically reduce your tilling time. Let them loose on a new garden bed, and they’ll use their feet and beaks to tear up the soil looking for tasty treats.

A Safe Way to Control Pests

Stop using insecticides in your yard that can have devastating effects on the local ecosystem. Instead, opt for a flock. Chickens love roaming around the yard looking for slugs, snails, beetles, and more. In fact, just the other day I observed one of our hens pluck a mosquito right out of thin air!

Insect pests can become a nightmare for a gardener or anyone trying to make the most out of their outdoor space. Not only will this trick cut down on pests, but is also a beneficial addition to a healthy chicken’s diet.

Save Money at the Market

While the upfront cost of starting a backyard coop may seem daunting, when broken down, you’ll actually be saving in the long run.

One curious coop keeper broke down the financial savings of producing your own eggs vs. buying them at the store. In her article, Cheaper than Store-Bought Eggs, Kristina Seleshanko estimated her family saved about $244 a year by raising their own hens.

This didn’t take into account start-up costs. While we were lucky enough to be able to convert an old garden shed into a coop with minimal cost, between chicks and supplies, we still spent less than $300 to start a flock of 20 chicks. Standard coops can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, but if you’re handy and looking for a new project, there are plenty of resources out there to learn how to build your own.

But admit it, there’s a certain entertainment factor when you catch them staring back at you through your patio door or clinging to your window screen: hello there!

But what about their own squirrel mind games? Picture this: a squirrel digs a hole and pretends to bury an acorn, all just to fool its fellow furry friend. Talk about next-level intelligence!

Ever wondered what squirrels taste like? Apparently, it’s not your typical gamey fare. Depending on their diet, squirrel meat can boast hints of walnuts, fruit, vegetables, and seeds. Some even say it tastes like chicken thighs. Quite the unexpected culinary delight!

So let’s dive into the realm of fascinating facts about these cute, clever creatures. Did you know that fox squirrels, North America’s biggest tree squirrels, weigh a whopping 2 to 3 pounds and are double the size of a gray squirrel?

Surprisingly, squirrel teeth never stop growing and can lengthen 6 inches per year! Chewing through tree nuts like acorns, walnuts, and hazelnuts is a necessary full-time job. But they also like to sink their teeth into Skippy Super Chunky Peanut Butter and fruitcake. Know what else is nuts? Squirrels can unintentionally help trees grow! Burying nuts in secret caches, squirrels sometimes forget to dig them up, allowing new tree seedlings to sprout. Have you noticed any oak seedlings in your yard?

Even under a foot of snow, these little foragers can locate their hidden treasures. And that fluffy tail? It’s not just for show—it serves as balance, shade, protection from the elements, a blanket, and even a rudder when they decide to take a dip. Talk about multitasking!

We all want an airy, spotlessly clean home, but if you’re using traditional cleaning products, you may be doing yourself more harm than good. Switching to sustainable, planet-friendly cleaning products can improve your air quality and your health.

In this article, we’ll explore the harmful chemicals in traditional cleaning products, the benefits of concentrates, the use of reusable bottles, top sustainable brands to trust, and share recipes for making your own cleaning solution.

Traditional cleaning products are full of harmful chemicals.

Traditional cleaning products often contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals that can pose risks to both our health and the environment. Ammonia, bleach, and phthalates are common ingredients found in many household cleaners, which are known to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can contribute to indoor air pollution.
When these chemicals are washed down the drain, they find their way into our waterways, where they can harm aquatic life and disrupt ecosystems. Store-bought cleaners are not only harmful for you and the environment, they’re also more expensive and are generally rich in plastic packaging. We can protect both our homes and the planet by considering alternatives such as effective homemade solutions, concentrates, and eco-friendly brands.

If you’re not ready to take the plunge and make your own cleaning solution yet, you can still make an impact by switching to concentrated cleaning products. Concentrates reduce the need for excessive packaging because they allow you to mix the product with water. This not only minimizes waste but also decreases the environmental impact of transportation, as fewer resources are needed to move smaller, lighter bottles.

Concentrates are also cost-effective in the long run. While the initial purchase might seem slightly higher, the diluted solutions last longer, saving you money over time. Plus, you’ll be contributing to a reduction in plastic waste, which is a win-win for your wallet and the environment.

It’s one of our favorites, and is making a big impact in the lives of their community members.

According to Calvin McConnell, the history of this family’s multi-generational and sustainable 180-acre farm goes back as far as 1787. McConnells’ Farm and Market has participated in the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model for the last eight years. The CSA model provides much-needed committed funds to the local farm and delivery of high-quality fresh farm produce for CSA participants.

The family appreciates their CSA members (75% are repeating yearly members), their seasonal clientele, and the land where they grow their food. Their peaches are the best that we have ever tasted, and the fruit has been their specialty since the 1930s. Various fruit trees, vegetable produce, and beautiful sunflowers and hollyhocks are grown on nearly 50 acres.

According to McConnell, the farm is not certified organic. However, their growing practices range from non-certified organic to integrated pest management (IPM). IPM is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on common-sense practices.

The McConnells are involved in every stage of crop production. Their home is on the farm. They drink the well and spring water and consume what they grow. This makes them highly aware and conscientious of safety precautions for their family and clientele. The farmers rely on crop rotation, planting ground covers to regenerate soil naturally rather than depleting it, drip irrigation, hand picking in place of herbicides, as well other sustainable techniques.

Community-supported agriculture (CSA) is a growing, mutually-beneficial partnership between local farmers and their community. Small farmers secure essential income at the beginning of the growing season, and people in the seasonal shares get weekly or bi-weekly access to fresh, local produce throughout the growing season. CSA provides farmers financial security, and community members get good quality food from local farmers.

There are roughly 4,000 CSA programs across the United States.

Most of the CSA shares supply a 3-5 person household. During the approximately 15-30 week season, each CSA box contains a variety of fresh food depending upon the harvest. A weekly selection can include fresh produce, eggs, dairy products, and whole grains. Each weekly box provides a new opportunity to explore new recipes and new ingredients. If you find that your share offers more than you can eat, you can share it with friends or preserve your fresh produce by freezing, pickling, and canning. Now is the time of year to sign up for a weekly or bi-weekly subscription.

Some CSAs offer a self-pick operation.

A selected area of blueberries, apples, peaches, pumpkins, cucumbers, grapes, and other produce and flowers is available for members to pick on certain days. Members are always the first to receive the best selection before opening up to sell to the general public.

Picking up your weekly CSA share is fun and educational for the whole family.

Children can gain an understanding of where and how the food they are eating is grown. They also become appreciative of how fresh local grown produce tastes. Now is the time of year to sign up for a weekly or bi-weekly subscription.

Owls are practically prehistoric: they have roamed the Earth for an estimated 55 to 65 million years. Scientists recognize roughly 260 species – a number that continues to grow! These nocturnal hunters are famously solitary and elusive. They are masters of silent flight, and much about their lives remains hidden.

Are you lucky enough to spot one in the wild?

Most of us rarely glimpse an owl. Their nocturnal habits and secretive nature keep them out of sight, though they live on every continent except Antarctica. However, some regions of the world see higher concentrations of owls than others. Southeastern Brazil is home to seventeen of the country’s twenty-six species. Similar clusters of species can also be found in southern Asia, along the Arizona–Mexico borderlands, in sub-Saharan Africa, and in China.

Why such richness in these regions? One theory is that these areas have remained relatively stable for millions of years. These regions also contain a wide variety of habitats, from sandy shores, to grasslands and dense forests. Owls are apex predators, occupying the uppermost levels of the food web, where ecological space is limited. Their diversity depends on the long-term persistence of varied habitats that allow multiple species to coexist.

There is still so much to learn about them. For instance, bonded pairs engage in what researchers call “soft talk”—a quiet, intimate exchange between mates. Scientists do not yet fully understand how owls find one another or decide to pair. But once bonded, this gentle communication becomes part of their relationship. They use it as they collaborate on selecting a nest site and raising their young.

Understanding the psychology of owls—their inner lives—is far more difficult. They communicate in subtle ways, offering only faint clues to their emotional states. As Jennifer Ackerman notes in her book What an Owl Knows: “Only a very, very small number of owls become ambassador birds.” They are sensitive creatures with distinct temperaments. Like people, they choose whether to engage.

Stay wild, owl child.

The so-called Harry Potter effect has fueled global fascination with owls, especially in parts of Asia where they are seen as symbols of good fortune. Their large forward-facing eyes and expressive, almost humanlike faces make them irresistibly compelling. It is easy to project our emotions onto them and to imagine they think as we do.

In many countries, including the United States, keeping an owl as a pet is illegal. Only licensed handlers may care for them, and then solely for rehabilitation or educational purposes. Small species such as the Northern Saw-whet Owl and the Eastern Screech-Owl were once thought to be easy to train. They appeared calm and compliant. We later realized we had misunderstood their behavior. When frightened, small owls freeze, compressing their bodies into the smallest possible profile. They become still in an attempt to disappear.

What we interpreted as cooperation was often terror. As Ackerman observes, “The owl may be doing what we ask, but inside it is dying.”

But nature—and every creature within it—is a world unto itself. Owls belong to intricate ecosystems that function independently of us. That independence is part of their beauty. We must resist the impulse to possess what enchants us. The camera offers a gentler alternative. When we stand still and lift a lens, we preserve a fleeting moment without disturbing it. We hold the image, not the creature. And that is enough.

Serbia’s pest management professionals are all-natural and beloved by all.

In northern Serbia, the town of Kikinda hosts astonishing winter roosts of Long-Eared Owls. As many as 30,000 birds gather in urban trees. In a single square, hundreds may perch together, transforming the scene into something that feels almost theatrical. Why here? Why year after year?

The answer lies in agriculture. Northern Serbia is largely farmland, and many farmers avoid rodenticides. Instead, they rely on traditional harvesting methods that leave grain scattered in the fields. That grain feeds rodents; the rodents feed the owls. It is a vivid example of ecological interconnectedness: when one link in the chain is sustained, the whole system thrives.

Kikinda’s main square has been declared a nature reserve—the first urban protected area in Serbia—to safeguard the owls’ winter habitat. During Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, decorations are not permitted in the trees where the owls roost, despite those trees being prime display spots. Disturbing the owls can result in fines of up to €10,000. The entire month of November is dedicated to them in a celebration known as “Sovember” (from sova, the Serbian word for owl). Schoolchildren write poems, create artwork, and even bake owl-shaped cookies in their honor.

In the dance between sunlight and solar panels, winter brings a unique nuance. While the sun’s rays may seem less intense, technological advancements have made solar panels more resilient. Even in overcast conditions, these panels work diligently to convert sunlight into electricity, offering a steady source of power during winter’s muted days.

In fact, just one hour of noontime summer sun is equal to the annual U.S. electricity demand, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Wind turbines stand tall against the winter sky, capturing the kinetic energy of the brisk winds. Contrary to expectation, winter becomes a boon for wind energy. The cold air, denser than its warmer counterpart, fuels the turbines more effectively. Winter storms, a common companion in some regions, amplify the power generated by these turbines.

Wind energy offers a multitude of benefits, making it one of the most promising renewable energy sources in the world.

Wind energy is clean and renewable, meaning it produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions and doesn’t deplete finite resources. Harnessing the power of wind helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates climate change.

Since wind is in plentiful supply, it’s a sustainable resource for as long as the sun’s rays heat the planet.”

Wind energy has been a major driver of economic development as well.

The wind energy sector creates jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and operation of wind farms. In 2022, 125,580 U.S. jobs helped power the domestic land-based wind energy industry, a 4.5% increase from the previous year. Additionally, wind energy projects often contribute to local economic development through tax revenues and land lease payments to landowners.

Investing in wind energy enhances energy security by diversifying the energy mix. Countries can reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and strengthen their energy independence by tapping into their domestic wind resources. In 2022, the U.S. invested $84 million in new distributed wind projects, nearly a 50% increase from the previous year, according to the 2023 Wind Market Report.

Wind energy projects can range from small-scale installations to large wind farms, offering scalability to meet diverse energy needs. Moreover, wind turbines can be combined with other renewable energy sources and energy storage technologies to create hybrid systems, enhancing flexibility and reliability.

The environmental benefits are impossible to ignore.

Wind energy production has minimal environmental impacts compared to conventional fossil fuel-based power generation. It reduces air and water pollution, conserves water resources, and helps protect ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

While some may express concern regarding the risks wind turbines pose to migratory bird populations, numbers of bird deaths are actually very low in comparison to other fabricated structures, such as high-rise buildings. Studies are even in process to lower these already minimal risks even more through methods such as paint color choices and other tactics to steer birds away from the turbines before collisions can happen.

As technology continues to evolve and costs decline, wind energy is poised to play an increasingly prominent role in the global transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Unlike fossil fuel-based power plants, hydropower plants do not burn fuel, helping to reduce air pollution and mitigate climate change.

Hydropower plants can quickly adjust their electricity output to respond to changes in demand or grid conditions. This flexibility makes hydropower a valuable resource for balancing the grid, integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, and providing grid stability and reliability.

These projects often include reservoirs that can store water for electricity generation and manage water resources for various purposes, including irrigation, flood control, and recreation. By regulating river flows and controlling floods, hydropower dams help protect downstream communities and ecosystems.

Hydropower plants have a long lifespan, often lasting decades with proper maintenance.

Once built, hydropower plants have relatively low operating and maintenance costs compared to other energy sources, making them economically competitive over the long term.

This energy source isn’t perfect, though. Volatility in weather patterns resulting from climate change can affect the resiliency of hydropower, specifically droughts that drain the source. Additionally, the surrounding habitats and animals that thrive in them can be displaced by large-scale dam-building projects.

“Despite it being the largest renewable source of electricity, hydropower does have its drawbacks,” Earth.org notes. “The most significant one of which is its damage to the surrounding environment and ecosystem. Most hydroelectric power plants require the construction of a dam, which would result in the destruction and fragmentation of the surrounding habitats.”

Beneath the surface, the earth’s warmth becomes a reliable ally in the pursuit of sustainable energy. Geothermal power plants tap into this internal heat, producing steam that turns turbines and generates electricity. Unaffected by external weather conditions, geothermal energy stands resilient, providing a consistent source of power for heating during winter’s chill.

Geothermal energy utilizes heat stored beneath the Earth’s surface, often in the form of hot water or steam, to generate electricity or provide direct heating.

This heat is accessed through geothermal reservoirs located deep underground. Geothermal energy is a renewable resource that relies on the earth’s natural heat, which is continually replenished by geothermal processes.

Geothermal power plants produce minimal greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel-based power plants, about 5.7 g of carbon dioxide, making them a cleaner energy alternative. These plants can provide baseload power, meaning they can generate electricity continuously, unlike some other renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are more intermittent. They also have a long lifespan, typically exceeding 24 years, and require relatively low maintenance once operational.

As with an energy source, geothermal has its own set of drawbacks.

These resources are limited to regions with high heat flow from the earth’s interior, such as volcanic areas and tectonic plate boundaries, making them geographically constrained. Additionally, developing geothermal projects, especially for electricity generation, can require significant upfront investment due to drilling and exploration expenses.

While it is considered renewable, geothermal still requires resource depletion. Continuous extraction of geothermal fluids can lead to reservoir depletion and decreased productivity over time if not managed sustainably. While geothermal energy has lower emissions compared to fossil fuels, some environmental concerns include the release of greenhouse gases and potentially harmful substances such as hydrogen sulfide and other volatile compounds from geothermal reservoirs.

Geothermal energy offers several advantages, including its renewable nature, low emissions, reliability, and direct-use applications.

However, challenges such as location constraints, high initial costs, environmental impacts, and resource management issues need to be carefully considered and addressed to maximize the potential of geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source.

As winter settles in, renewable energy resources weave a narrative of resilience and sustainability.

From the subtle glow of solar panels to the majestic dance of wind turbines, these technologies promise not just warmth for our homes but also a greener, more sustainable future. Before taking the leap to a cleaner source, be sure to do your own research to see what option is best for your home and community. Let the chill of winter be met with the warmth of renewable energy, lighting the way to a cleaner, more resilient tomorrow.
