The impacts of climate change are undeniable. But we can find hope in action.
From extreme weather events to rising sea levels, the consequences of human activity on our planet are increasingly apparent. Amidst concern and uncertainty, individuals and communities are joining together to share their climate anxiety and learn how they can make a difference. In this article, Yvonne Dwyer, Master Naturalist and OPL contributor, shares some key takeaways from her recent participation in a climate stewardship course.
I recently had the privilege of participating in a Climate Steward course offered by the University of California at Davis. The course is open to the public, and focuses on the importance of community and our connection to the land and the indigenous people who came before us. The course addresses the reality of our changing planet and the climate trauma we’re experiencing, especially by those most affected by climate change.
The Climate Steward program stresses the importance of our biodiverse world and what practical actions we can take to reduce climate change and make a difference. I hope that these shared learnings will inspire you to take action for our beautiful planet.
Connect with Nature and Community
A core principle of climate stewardship is recognizing our interconnectedness with the natural world. Spending time in nature and deepening our appreciation for its intricacies can cultivate a sense of responsibility for our environment. Strengthening ties with community members also fosters collective action. That community connection empowers us to work together towards a just and sustainable future.
Practice Mindfulness
The climate stewardship program also emphasized the importance of mindfulness. Mindfulness practices can help manage the emotional toll of climate change. By cultivating self-awareness and emotional regulation, we can transform feelings of fear and helplessness into effective climate action. Read more about how you can find calm amidst climate anxiety.
Take Individual and Collective Responsibility
Climate stewardship encompasses both individual and collective efforts. On an individual level, we can reduce our carbon footprint by making conscious choices about our consumption habits. Measure your impact more easily by using One Planet Life’s sustainability tracker on our app. Community initiatives, such as environmental stewardship, reconnecting landscapes, and promoting community science and education, play a vital role in creating a more sustainable future.
Support Local Action and Nature-Based Solutions
The course highlighted the power of local action in addressing climate change. Communities play a leading role in building a more resilient future, from improving neighborhoods and regenerating urban ecology to advancing nature-based solutions for ecosystem restoration. An emphasis on water management and sustainable agriculture have direct benefits on individuals.
Prepare for Emergencies and Address Inequalities
As climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, emergency preparedness becomes increasingly crucial. Identifying evacuation routes, establishing safety zones, and supporting community-based disaster preparedness initiatives are essential steps in building resilient communities. Advocating for affordable housing and equitable access to resources is also vital to addressing existing inequalities exacerbated by climate change. Be better prepared with recommended gear from OPL members.
Live Sustainably and Engage with Your Community
Creating energy-efficient homes, conserving water and energy, adopting sustainable transportation, and supporting renewable energy are all essential components of sustainable living. Buying local, reducing fertilizer use, and utilizing electric-powered landscaping equipment are additional ways to minimize our environmental impact. Collaborating with local emergency response professionals and community organizations strengthens our collective ability to respond effectively to climate-related challenges.
A Call to Action
The trauma effects of climate change are real, and impact our planet as well as the well-being of our communities. The climate steward course reaffirmed my belief that while the challenges of climate change are significant, they are not insurmountable. By embracing our connection to nature, fostering community, and taking both individual and collective action, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
I encourage you to explore ways to get involved in your community and take action to mitigate the effects of climate change. Remember, every step we take, no matter how small, can make a difference. Take courage, and have hope!
