This delicious applesauce recipe is perfect any time of year, but especially in the fall when apples are ready for harvest in the Northeast. There are so many different varieties of apples, each with their own unique flavor. One of my family’s favorites is the Honeycrisp variety. Honeycrisp apples are crisp, slightly tart, and sweet, perfect for eating or use in various recipes and baked goods. Enjoy the flavors of the season with this easy, delicious applesauce!
Makes about 32 ounces of applesauce
Ingredients:
- 10 medium-sized Honeycrisp apples (you can substitute or mix your favorite apple)
- 1 cup of filtered water
- 1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
Instructions:
- Wash, peel, and core apples.
- Cut each apple into quarters and cut those quarters into thirds.
- In a 3-quart saucepan, add apples, water, and fresh lemon juice.
- Cook until soft on medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, for approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the cinnamon stick, if using. Cool applesauce completely, then store in the refrigerator.
Notes:
- Applesauce can be frozen for use later! I recommend storing them in 1- to 2-cup increments in freezer-safe containers.
- I did not add sugar to this recipe. If you prefer your applesauce to be sweeter, add 1/4 cup of sugar or honey when cooking the apples.
