Be prepared for whatever life throws at you with One Planet Life’s November challenge

So much to do, so little time!  The holiday season is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to start planning.  The end of the year is full of feasting, gift-giving, and other special events with the people you love.  Celebrating is important, and it doesn’t have to take a toll on the environment.  One Planet Life’s Gathering and Gifting Challenge is designed to help you reduce your waste, create greener eating habits, and gift sustainably.

Reduce your stress by being a smart planner.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of our planet and our current climate crisis, especially when coupled with the added pressure of an impending holiday season.  Spending time with loved ones is well worth the effort, but there is much to do before they arrive.  And if you live in an area where weather events may impact those plans, you want to make sure you’re prepared.

Being prepared is smart, whether you’re expecting climate-related weather patterns or just a flurry of holiday guests.  This month’s focus is all about being ready for whatever life throws at you.

Spending time together can still be sustainable.

Special events and traditions may seem to be at odds with your carbon reduction goals.  But they don’t have to be!  Maximize your impact by planning holiday gatherings with the planet in mind.  Create a beautiful tablescape with items already found in your home or found from your local thrift shop.  Plan a veggie-forward menu to wow your guests, and encourage them to bring their own reusable takeaway containers for leftovers.

Gifting and gift wrapping can be so wasteful.  Practice conscious consumerism by choosing a gift that is unique, consumable, or thrifted.  Or consider giving an experience or donating to a cause your loved one cares about. If you are going to give a gift, utilize recycled or reusable materials to wrap it up.

Winter storm or severe weather event? No problem.

Gathering supplies to be prepared for a severe weather event is important, and can be life saving.  While you may not have control over the climate event, you can make a plan to keep you and your loved ones safe.  Having the right tools can make a huge difference.  Later this month, OPL will unveil a curated list of recommended supplies for hiking, camping, electrical outages, emergency situations, and more.  They also make practical gifts!
